Sad people dance, too. Skeptics should be relieved of their LED pacifiers and redirected to Where Do You Belong? — the fourth release by electronic pop artist Digits. It's the project of Alt Altman, who, along with the most Hipster Runoff–baiting name imaginable, has a knack for creating emotional R&B-influenced space-noir. Unlike bleep-bloopy synth-pop made by kids who have just discovered computers, Digits sound like the work of a computer who has just discovered feelings. Where Do You Belong? is full of beat-driven dance-floor-ready tracks like "So Cold," "Modern Mess," and "Looking for the Cure," but is also overlayed with anxiety and existential nausea. The album is influenced by Altman's move from his Toronto home to the UK (where such artists as James Blake and the xx have shifted the blue-eyed soul tradition to post-dubstep arthouse), and then to Berlin, where he lives now. Altman is releasing the EP for free to anyone who sends him proof that they have recently purchased music, saying, "If you're buying recorded music at least once every two months, then as far as I'm concerned you're doing your part to support music creation — and it doesn't hurt anyone for you to have more of it for free."
