There has been no shortage of jam-packed/outdoor/low-dough shows in Providence this summer, and it’s only fitting that the dog days of mid-August lead us to the Scurvy Dog (1718 Westminster St, 401.270.7980, scurvydogbar.com) for an all-day rock bash this Saturday (the 16th) in the parking lot out back — and it’s free of charge! Eleven bands will perform all day and all of the night, topped off with a headlining set from Atlantic Thrills (let the piñata-bashing commence, fellas!).
Local musicians Terry Linehan and Jami Wolloff opened their “punk rock and roll pub” a little more than six years ago. Linehan previously served as Green Day’s backing guitarist during the American Idiot tour and continues to play with Hope Anchor (who are scheduled to perform at 3:45). Wolloff shreds for the veteran punk rock outfit M.O.T.O. (Masters Of The Obvious) as well as the Elvis Presley tribute band Louisiana Hayride. August 16 also happens to mark the anniversary of Presley’s death, so this set should be a wild one.
“We play Sun Records-era Elvis Presley rockabilly music, with a little bit of the early RCA stuff thrown in for good measure,” said Wolloff when we spoke earlier this week. “We don’t play ‘Teddy Bear’ or any of the really goofy stuff.
“We have an upright bass player, and I play a ’55 hollow body Gibson ES175 with a tape echo — it’s the real deal,” he said. “There are Elvis celebrations all over the globe on August 16, and we’re doing our part.”

The roster of musical acts spans Brooklyn (1-800-BAND will open the fest) to Shanghai, China (the sax-driven, free-form mayhem of Round Eye). And there are plenty of local and regional rock acts on the bill, of course. A killer trifecta will close out the show: electro post-punk trio Beta Motel (featuring ex-members of Mahi Mahi), Boston’s White Dynomite, and PVD’s favorite indie-surf-punk-pop crew, Atlantic Thrills. Their self-titled debut is a must-have for the summertime party playlist (cue up “Day At the Beach”), and these dudes are hands-down the wildest live show in town.
The Thrills’ lead singer Eric Aguiar checked with an update just prior to our deadline:
“Yes, at least one giant Scurvy Dog piñata will be unleashed! We also have some new shit that we’re psyched to play at this show — one is a surfy garage stomper called ‘Vices’ and the other a spooky, psychedelic track called ‘Am I Dead.’ ”
There will be eats and beers available for purchase, including homemade Cajun gumbo and the crazy-yet-tasty concoctions from Dog Eat Dog (go for the mind-blowing “Wiggety Waaah?” dog or burger). The outdoor tiki bar will be serving up potent potions, and Foolproof Brewing will be on hand providing their latest libation, called Augotoberfest.
Hopefully we can pencil in yet another quality music fest to the annual PVD summertime calendar.
“As long as everyone is well-behaved and nobody complains then yes, this will be at least an annual event,” said Wolloff, “and maybe even two or three times a year if we’re lucky.”
