• OKBARI (or their larger iteration, OKBARI MIDDLE EASTERN ENSEMBLE) are committed to making sure you don't make your Maine way without getting a flavor for the rest of the world. On Friday, they'll present Sufi devotional songs from the "mystical asik tradition of Turkey and Central Asia," at the West End Yoga and Dance Studio on Brackett Street. The songs taken from the 12th to 17th centuries "are meditative and transporting both for listeners and performers." And there will be dancing with JAMILEH, too.
• Since his days with STILLVIEW, JOHN PAUL has been a songwriter and performer to watch. Now done with the Boston-based BLACK TIE AFFAIR, he's in California and pimping a solo record that he'll be bringing back home to Maine with a gig at Slainte on April 19. Recorded with TOM ACOUSTI down in Nashville with some great session players, Belmont Boulevard is getting some college radio attention and John Paul's touring solo to support it, picking up band members in each city.
• Rock band with an oboe HOBOE have entered the studio for the first time, working on songs with SEAN SLAUGHTER at his V69 STUDIOS. "I'm Your Man" is in the can and as soon as song two is polished, Hoboe promise a single release.
• Speaking of SLAUGHTER, whom you should know from his time fronting SUPERSOUL CHALLENGER among other projects, he's teamed recently with ELDEMUR KRIMM's STEFEN SAMUELS and they're calling themselves CLUBBER LANG. We can hear them already.
