While the workers, executives, and boards of both organizations deserve a round of applause for having the vision to see where the best future lies for their clients, there is an unsung hero in this story — and that is the Boston Foundation.
A landmark report sponsored by the Boston Foundation gave AIDS Action CEO Rebecca Haag the idea to explore a merger. Titled Passion & Purpose: Raising the Fiscal Fitness Bar for Massachusetts Nonprofits, it detailed the massive contribution nonprofit organizations make to the economy, and outlined with clinical precision future challenges they face.
The Boston Foundation helped fund the preliminary spade work for the AIDS Action/Cambridge Cares merger. In other words, the foundation put its money where its mouth is.
Cambridge Cares, AIDS Action, and the Boston Foundation have established a template that social-services agencies would be wise to follow.
