Early Fall fire
ICA and the origins of "Pow!" the cars of 50 cent, and hockey benefits the Leary Firefighters Foundation

See ya in the funny pages

Yes, the Institute of Contemporary Art’s new exhibit is about the influence of comic books on highbrow fine art. But if you think " Splat! Boom! Pow! The Influence of Cartoons in Contemporary Art " is about the process of dumbing down, check out the thematic sub-exhibits: " Squashing the Force Field of Pop Icons, " " The Eruption of Mythomania and the Spewing of Alter Egos, " and " Transforming the Language of Art with Alien Technology. " The 60-piece show — which originated at Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum and features works from Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, among others — arrives at the ICA, 955 Boylston Street, on September 17 and runs through January 4; call (617) 266-5152.

Dude, where’s 50 Cent’s car?

We knew Funkmaster Flex was king of the airwaves — both at Boston’s JAM’N 94.5 and at NYC’s HOT 97 — and an early king of the major-label mixtape: but who knew he was also king of the road? Flex’s latest venture? A company that connects rich-and-famous sports and hip-hop stars with one-of-a-kind super-high-end rides. His car club, Team Baurtwell, includes everyone from P. Diddy to Shaq. And this August at the Bayside Expo Center, Flex brings together the worlds of custom-car culture and hip-hop in " Funkmaster Flex’s Celebrity Car Show, " with appearances by mixtape superstar Joe Budden, R-rated sex queen Lil’ Kim, Cam’ron, and Juelz Santana, as well as a look at the cars of 50 Cent, Ludacris, Tyrese, DMX, Nelly, and sundry local sports stars. That’s August 23 at 2 p.m. at the Bayside, 200 Mount Vernon Street. Tickets are $30; call (800) 477-6849.

Sunny Days are here again

The on-again, off-again saga of Seattle emo godfathers Sunny Day Real Estate is back on, albeit under a different name. Enigmatic frontman Jeremy Enigk has re-formed three-quarters of the classic Sunny Day line-up — including the one-time Foo Fighters rhythm section of drummer William Goldsmith and bassist Nate Mendel — as the Fire Theft and promptly signed the band to Beverly-based Rykodisc, of all places. (Sub Pop’s staff must be crushed.) An album is scheduled for September, and the band have already booked a tour that will bring them to Boston on October 18 at Axis, 13 Lansdowne Street. It’s an 18-plus show, and tickets are $15; call (617) 423-NEXT.

Fire & ice

Denis Leary’s annual Celebrity Hat Trick hockey match returns to the FleetCenter on September 28, with a gaggle of Bruins and NHL greats facing off against Hollywood rink rats to benefit the Leary Firefighters Foundation. This year’s all-star teams are among the best in the four-year history of the event, with Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Ray Bourque, Cam Neely, Guy LaFleur, Marcel Dionne, and Pat LaFontaine as well as Kiefer Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, and Tim Robbins. Tickets are $25 and $50; call (617) 931-2000.
