Jed Weintrob’s slick, virtual romance proves that in love, the technology may change, but the clichés remain the same. Neurotic Manhattanite John Roth (Josh Hamilton) has lost his fiancée, so he resigns himself to the masturbatory fantasies of Internet porno. At least he’s making money with his obsessions: he’s set up his own voyeuristic Web site called Intercon-X with his roommate, Moe (Harold Perrineau), a ladies’ man who never seems to have any trouble getting the real thing himself and is thus full of advice for John. Like, get out of your funk and take up with saucy Internet exhibitionist Jordan (Vanessa Ferlito). But actual human contact has consequences, and John’s date with Jordan reverberates over a network of other losers, including Al (John Fleck), the host of a man-on-man S&M site, Moira (Isabel Gillies), a needy artist who tunes into the "Last Call" suicide Web site, and teenage Ed (Eric Millegan), who’s desperate to find a gay club in rural Ohio. With its split screens, slo-mo, and jazzy photography, On_Line looks cutting-edge, but its platitudes about love and life are nothing new. (87 minutes)
