Gina Gershon gives a gritty, tough performance as Jacki, the lead singer of the all-girl punk band Clam Dandy, in this first film from music supervisor Alex Steyermark (Hedwig and the Angry Inch). The minimal plot revolves around the difficulties faced by the ladies as they struggle to make a name for themselves in LA. Gershon sings her own original songs, Drea de Matteo is sufficiently strung out as the coked-up bass player, and Lori Petty and Shelly Cole offer balance as the band’s happily involved couple. As incidents, accidents, and casualties mount, the story starts to feel more like a skuzzy Lifetime movie than a film about a rock band. But Steyermark gets the punk vibe right, and the performances, including one by Marc Blucas as a recently released ex-con, are tight. It’s like the movie says: they should stick to the music. That’s what they know how to do.
