Signs, signs, everywhere there're signs
Some of the best from last night's protests outside Madison Square Garden
BY CAMILLE DODERO

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2004, NEW YORK -- BUSH LIES – WHO DIES? DUH-MOCRACY. A CON JOB IS WORSE THAN A BLOW JOB. On Thursday evening before the President's speech, about 1000 protestors filled Union Square for a candlelight vigil called for by United for Peace and Justice. As usual, they were waving placards, holding messages, and screaming in all capital letters. Here are some of the more unusual ones that appeared in the Square.

Sign maker: Jory Stiefel from Newark

Sign: ARE WE SUPPOSED TO FORGET OSAMA?

Background: "I read somewhere today that the name 'Osama' hadn't been used once [during the RNC]. Yet they continually brought up 9/11 and exploited it for their politics, which I think is a horrible thing." He made the sign today at work -- after his Republican bosses left.

Sign maker: Dick Tater from Fort Lauderdale

Sign: PORNFORPROGRESS.COM; GET ACTIVE, GET HEARD, GET OFF!

Background: An adult-film producer in Fort Lauderdale, Tater's a real estate developer who financed a low-budget porn DVD featuring four hardcore vignettes starring, "all your favorite right-wing characters": Donald Cumsfeld, Al Frankenbeans, Lynnie Dickland. He made the film a month ago; so far, he's already sold over 1000 copies. Proceeds from DVD either go directly to John Kerry's Sunshine State campaign or Floridian activists trying to get Kerry elected in Jeb Bush's jurisdiction. The disc's also available at PornforKerry.com.

Sign holder: David Rosner from Manhattan

Sign: AL FRANKEN WRESTLED IN HIGH SCHOOL

Background: "You know how Al Franken always says, 'You know, I wrestled in high school.' Well, I just wanted everyone to know that." In addition to being a Jewish Marine and a Gulf War veteran, Manhattan resident Rosner says he's also a stand-up comedian and an aspiring actor. I guess this was supposed to be funny.

Sign holder: Jesus Suarez from San Diego, California

Sign: BUSH LIED, MY SON DIED – AND 1000s MORE!

Background: Suarez' son died fighting in Iraq on March 27, 2003. At 9 p.m., Suarez had been sitting in the park for 12 hours to honor his son while Bush was in town. But his sit-in didn't end with the Bush's visit: he'd vowed not to leave Union Square Park until the President brings the troops home. But by nightfall, Suarez already looked ready to go home.

Sign holder: Trash bucket on 23rd Street

Sign: YOU KNOW WHO ELSE IS BIG ON GOD? OSAMA BIN LADEN

Background: The Republicans may have forgotten about Osama, but the protestors certainly haven't.

Sign holder: Crunch E. Carrot, a Presidential candidate from Virginia

Sign: EAT ME! CARROT2004.ORG

Background: PETA doesn't waste an opportunity to promote vegetarianism. While this picture was taken, Crunch E. Carrot yelled, "Peace begins at the dinner table -- eating meat is a vote for Jeffrey Dahmer!"

Sign holder: Karolin Yahyaoglu

Sign: BUSH AND DICK, IT'S JUST ONE FUCKING THING AFTER ANOTHER

Background: Yahyaoglu considers this sign an heirloom: she made it for the RNC 2000. "I wish I didn't have a reason to use it anymore," she says. "But that Bush and Dick pair just won't go away!"
