MONDAY, JULY 26, 2004 -- Need proof of the two-party system’s connections to corporate interests? The Maine delegation to the Democratic National Convention were presented with their very own applications for a Democratic Party "affinity" credit card, as part of their introductory convention materials at Monday’s Maine delegate breakfast (likely, delegates from all the states get this in their packages of swag). Maine state party chair Dorothy Melanson explained that the Visa card issued by Providian National Bank would generate money for the party by diverting a percentage of the money used via the card to the state party. In addition, card holders can earn accelerated rewards by using the card to donate to the party. "I expect the governor will be the first to fill it out," Melanson joked of the application Governor John Baldacci held in front of her. "Or his wife."
