Is red-white-and-blue the new black?

BY JOCELYN BRICK-TURIN

THURSDAY, July 29, 2004 -- Let’s talk style. After all, this is the week-long bash for the ticket with self-proclaimed "better hair" and VP nominee called "boyish" as often as "Edwards." We know the nominees have got looks but what about the delegates? What about the people that make up this inclusive party of the people?

For the week at least, I’m afraid RedWhiteandBlue hats are the new little black dress. And campaign buttons might be the Tiffany’s of today. Though it has been said that the elegant get fully dressed and then remove one piece of jewelry. By that guideline the average convention groupie is, well... what’s the antithesis of elegant?

Signs feel like the latest handbag-label craze. Everyone’s got one, though some are "knock off" quality. Coach or Kerry. Dolce or Heinz. Louis or Obama. It doesn’t matter, just make sure you have one.

I suppose credentials are the convention version of opinions. Everyone has at least one, usually more. Some are worn more on the sleeve, others tucked into suit pockets or folded up in wallets. But I digress...

Are men’s plain suits and red ties classic or getting old? Are pastel suits for women trendy or overdone? At least we have one more night to sort out the important stuff.
