Notes on Berklee's Spinal Tap event with Christopher Guest

Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel
|
Sting has an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. David Bowie has one. And on November 30, the name of Christopher Guest, the actor/musician/director perhaps best known as guitarist Nigel Tufnel from This Is Spinal Tap, will be added to the list. Has Berklee gone just a wee bit too far? Not according to Berklee president Roger Brown. “If you talk to any musician in contemporary music, Christopher Guest is probably one of the musicians they admire most.” Credit his dead-on impersonation of a hapless British rocker in Spinal Tap — the best parody is just one degree removed from reality, and that’s something Spinal Tap, as both an idea and a real touring band, have achieved. On the night Guest gets his degree from Brown at the Berklee Performance Center, he’ll also join about 50 Berklee students and faculty in rock, swing, and Latin renditions of his songs. Don’t be shocked if members of Boston rock’s aristocracy and/or some of Guest’s collaborators show up. And though producer Larry Monroe is still assembling the program, don’t be stunned if Spinal Tap’s record of five bassists playing the classic “Big Bottom” is finally broken. Brown says that Guest has “used the soul and spirit of music for the fodder of a lot of his humor.” He quotes the “Big Bottom” line “I met her on Sunday/’Twas my lucky bun day,” praising its “juxtaposition of stupidity and cleverness. It’s dry, but there’s so much truth in there.” And he adds, “We have a sense of humor. You have to have a sense of humor if you’re going to spend your life in the music industry.”

- Tap into Berklee
“This,” said Christopher Guest from the Berklee Performance Center stage, “is really difficult to believe. Until an hour ago, I thought it was a practical joke.”
- Not ready for prime time
With the release of yet another film starring former Saturday Night Live stars trying in vain to recapture the glories of their Lorne Michaels days - that would be The Benchwarmers starring David Spade and Rob Schneider
- Guest appearance
Those who expect ingratiating clowning and motormouth shtick from Christopher Guest, funny-ha-ha filmmaker of Waiting for Guffman , Best of Show , and A Mighty Wind , guess again. In public, he’s deadpan and somber.
- Scene and heard
Entertainment companies are pumping out music DVD titles by the hundreds, and 2008 will see a deluge of releases across all genres.
- Class of the Titans
Hypothesis: If a band perform a tribute to a parody musical act, does it create a meta-textual black hole from which no form of entertainment can escape?
- Fall back
If you cannot remember the past, so Santayana said, you’re condemned to repeat it. Watch trailers for this fall's new releases.
- Brothers of the Head
It's kind of like Spinal Tap with a shared liver and no laughs. Watch the trailer for Brothers of the Head (QuickTime)
- Power failure
There must be something about Bob Balaban, straight man extraordinaire, that reminds Hollywood and indie filmmakers of the people who sign their paychecks.
- Vegas and Jungleland
Paul Shaffer is a happenin’ cat. Pick an It Moment from pop culture over the past 30 years and Shaffer was there. He was an original band member on Saturday Night Live . He played hapless promo guy Artie Fufkin in This Is Spinal Tap . Disco? He co-wrote “It’s Raining Men.” And he helped David Letterman break ground as his glittery, ironic bandleader/sidekick.
- Lords of acid rock
At both shows Earl Greyhound have played in the Boston area to date — upstairs at the Middle East (to which they return this Tuesday) in early October and outdoors in Harvard Square for Oktoberfest a week later — people laughed. Earl Greyhound, "All Better Now" (mp3)
