Notes on Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and the Unseen

“As far as I know,” says saxophonist KEN FIELD, “Forked Tongue is the only CD ever released to include songs by both ORNETTE COLEMAN and BILLY IDOL.” Those songs would be “Chippie” and “White Wedding,” respectively. Field, who plays in BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC and the REVOLUTIONARY SNAKE ENSEMBLE, is talking about his latter group, who have a CD-release gig at Ryles on May 30. Best short description of the RSE? Field: “A funk and experimental brass band.” . . . Maybe it’s the George Clooney effect. On May 15, Felt is holding an event called “FASHION FOR DARFUR,” which sounds so wrong, but the end result is good: proceeds will be donated to three Darfur-aid organizations. Fashion shows will be in the categories of Rock ’n’ Roll (complete with live music on the first floor by Split Infinity), Eco-Chic, Hollywood Glamour, and Sports. Let the dowdy get rowdy. . . . Hardcore punk-rockers the UNSEEN kick off a national tour with WAR TAPES and TIGER ARMY at the Middle East downstairs May 13.

- Police force
Along came the Police, packing cold, steely hits with flashes of heat.
- Cinematic
Talking with Nathaniel Facey, the alto-saxophonist in the London band Empirical, you find it difficult at first to pin down where and how the quintet developed their unusual compositional style.
- Midwestern master
I was going to say Roscoe Mitchell laughs like Mutley. But that’s not it exactly.
- Visionary sounds
Sonic Youth, Andrew Hill, Bob Dylan, and more
- Sam Yahel Trio
Sam Yahel’s expressive approach to the Hammond B3 organ has made him one of the most sought-after sidemen in jazz.
- Make like a leaf
Fall appropriately takes the baton (sorry, Olympics still on the mind) from a stand-out summer of music in Portland.
- 52 ways to leave 2009
Your usual lackadaisical approach to New Year's Eve — just see what happens and go with the flow — is not going to cut it this year. Sure, the end of this decade may not have the same kind of new-millennium pressure riding on it as the last one, but the plunge into 2010 is a milestone nonetheless.
- James Blood Ulmer
This time Ulmer was in a brooding mood.
- From Rio to Austin to Boston
Carnaval Brasileiro isn't a concert — it's a bacchanal, a dance party that surpasses the lunk-headed debauchery of New Orleans Mardi Gras and is more in the spirit of Rio.
- Marc Ribot
If you know Ribot only through his brilliant sidemanning with Burnett and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, you don’t really know Ribot.
- Steering off course
We recommend the course taught by the indie filmmaker, the course inspired by a Daily Show regular, and the course considered “experimental.”
