El Oriental de Cuba’s shrimp-and-fish stew
Soup is good food
BY TAMARA WIEDER
Previous Columns

When you think Cuban food, you probably think of the Cuban sandwich. And that’s fine — to hear my carnivorous friends talk, it’s certainly worthy of whatever adoration it receives. But there are other dishes that deserve attention, not least of which is the sopón de camarón y pescado — shrimp-and-fish stew — at El Oriental de Cuba, a Jamaica Plain hole-in-the-wall.

Chicken soup may be good for the soul, but when it comes to soothing the palate, this subtly spicy dish does the trick. Loaded with mussels, shrimp, squid, red and green pepper, and chunks of fish, all swimming in a rich, buttery broth, the sopón is a filling meal unto itself, and for a bargain price. Order a side of fried plantains, and you’ve got yourself a little piece of Cuban heaven.

Available on Mondays for $6.50 for a small and $8.50 for a large at El Oriental de Cuba, 416 Centre Street, in Jamaica Plain. Call (617) 524-6464.
