THE CHAPTERS ALTERNATE IN PERSPECTIVE. WHOSE SHOES WERE THE MOST FUN TO STEP INTO?
Catherine [Greig] was the most fascinating. I've felt that way ever since writing the scene in Brutal, where she meets [Bulger] on Malibu Beach in Dorchester on a cold February night [right before they go on the run]. He emerges from the shadows, the two of them look at each other, and they're off. It's like Casablanca. Of course, it didn't happen exactly like that — she was in the back seat while Weeks was in the front, but that always stuck with me.
YOU SAID YOU'D LIKE TO WRITE GREIG'S BOOK. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST INTRIGUING ABOUT HER?
From what Kevin has always told me, she's a truly impressive person. He never had anything but the nicest things to say about her — she's razor sharp, and very strong. When Kevin saw them the first five times [after Greig and Bulger went on the run], she looked fabulous — like they were on vacation. But what happened to her? Was it hell? Judging from the pictures, she didn't look like she was a woman on vacation. She looked like a woman who was on the run.
YOU'VE DONE A LOT OF HYPOTHETICAL SPECULATION ABOUT WHAT'S GONE DOWN IN THE PAST 16 YEARS. WHAT DO YOU THINK MIGHT TRANSPIRE OVER THE NEXT 16 MONTHS?
I'm not a lawyer, and I really have no idea. As far as Catherine, they still haven't let her out on bail, so I would imagine that she has information. I'm sure she's going to write a book, though. Everyone and their mother will be after that — including yours truly.
